I've been turning wood for the past 15 years. It started in middle school, with a beginner pen turning class — and a dad who happened to have a small wood shop with a midi lathe in it. I caught the bug and kept going: pens, spindles, bowls, anything I could mount on the lathe.

For years I frequented a spot where local gardeners dropped off tree cutoffs to recycle. That's where I learned to work green wood — turning fresh-cut bowls straight from the log, watching them dry, finishing them by hand.

Eventually I turned my attention to segmented bowls. I started with basic patterns and worked my way up to pieces over 12 inches across with more than 600 segments. Along the way I got into making my own custom tools and sharpening — because the cleaner the edge, the cleaner the cut.

These days I teach what I've learned at MakerSpace Charlotte, helping new turners take their first cut and experienced makers refine their technique.
